Compare website quotes by looking at what you receive ready to use, what you pay later and what remains your business's responsibility. A one-off price or monthly fee alone does not tell you whether two quotes are genuinely comparable.

A useful comparison covers at least design, copywriting, page count, hosting, technical support, changes, search engine optimisation, the domain, email, contract term, ownership and the price of additional work.

Use this table with every quote

Item to checkWhat should you ask?
DesignWill you plan the structure and content, or do I supply everything ready to use?
CopywritingWill you write the text using my business information?
Page countHow many separate pages are included?
MobileWill the website work on phones, tablets and computers?
ContactDoes the build include a form or another way to get in touch?
SEOWhat does the search engine optimisation actually include?
HostingIs the service that keeps the website online included?
Technical supportWho fixes errors after launch?
Content changesWhat do small updates cost?
DomainWho owns and pays for the domain?
EmailDoes the price include setup, migration or the email service itself?
ContractHow long is the initial contract term?
OwnershipWhat does the customer own, and what happens when the contract ends?
Additional workWhat is excluded, and how much does additional work cost?

If a quote does not answer one of these points, that does not automatically make it a bad quote. It simply means you need to clarify the point before deciding.

Do not compare different products on price alone

For example, a €900 one-off project and a €69 monthly service may not include the same things.

The one-off project might cover only the website build. Another quote might also include copywriting, hosting, technical support and small changes later.

So the right question is:

What will my business need to buy, do or arrange in addition to this price?

Calculate the first year, but consider ongoing responsibilities too

When comparing, calculate at least:

first-year cost = setup or project fee + monthly fees + required separate services

Also list separately:

  • domain renewal
  • email service
  • paid licences
  • maintenance
  • content changes
  • technical support
  • any ongoing SEO work

This prevents a quote with separate costs from accidentally looking cheaper than a more comprehensive service.

Example: the same price does not mean the same content

A fictional example:

ItemQuote AQuote B
Build€1,200 one-off payment€69/month
CopywritingCustomer writes itIncluded
Hosting€20/monthIncluded
Technical supportHourly rateIncluded
Small changesHourly rateAgreed allowance included
ContractProject ends at launchOngoing service

This table does not tell you which is better for everyone. It shows why simply comparing "€1,200 versus €69" is not a fair comparison.

What should you ask about SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can mean very different things in different quotes.

Ask what the provider will do in practice. For example:

  • page titles
  • meta descriptions
  • clear URLs
  • heading structure
  • mobile friendliness
  • image optimisation
  • sitemap
  • indexing settings
  • internal links
  • ongoing content work

Making a website technically understandable to search engines is different from producing monthly SEO content, researching competitors and tracking keywords.

Understand ownership and the end of the contract before ordering

Ask in writing:

  • who owns the domain
  • who owns the customer's own text and images
  • whether source code is included in the delivery
  • whether hosting continues only for the duration of the contract
  • whether the website's technical implementation can be moved elsewhere
  • what happens after the notice period

There is no single correct model. A one-off project, a licensed system and an ongoing service are different products.

The important thing is knowing which model you are buying.

Golden Consulting Oy owns the source code of the website it produces. The customer's domain and original materials supplied by the customer remain with the customer.

Always check current terms on the pricing page and in the terms of service.

The best quote makes its contents easy to understand

A quote should not leave you guessing about what happens after launch.

When two quotes look different, compare their contents and responsibilities first. Then the price starts to mean something.

If you are still considering the delivery model, read monthly subscription or a one-off website build and what a business website costs.
