There is no button that adds your business to ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. For a page's content to be used in summaries and snippets and cited clearly, OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's web search crawler, needs access to the site. The server or CDN (Content Delivery Network) must allow the traffic too. Visibility and citations are not guaranteed.

If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, OpenAI may still learn the page's address elsewhere and sometimes show just a link and title. That is different from having the page's content available as a source for an answer.

Beyond access, the central question is much the same as in good web search: is the page a relevant, useful and reliable source for the user's question?

How does ChatGPT use the web?

When ChatGPT uses web search, it can find current information online and include citations and links in its answer.

This is separate from the model's training data.

OpenAI uses different bots for different purposes:

  • OAI-SearchBot relates to visibility in ChatGPT search
  • GPTBot relates to content that may be used to develop models

A business can therefore allow the search bot without automatically making the same choice for GPTBot.

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot

If you want your site to be a potential source in ChatGPT search, do not block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt.

A firewall, CDN or bot protection system can still block the crawler even when robots.txt allows it. OpenAI recommends making sure its search crawler's traffic can reach the site.

2. Make pages public and easy to retrieve

A useful search source should not be hidden behind a login, broken JavaScript or difficult navigation.

Put important details in visible text:

  • the business name
  • services
  • location or service area, where relevant
  • prices or how pricing works, where these can be published
  • contact details
  • current terms
  • useful answers to customers' questions

3. Write answers that make sense on their own

If an article is titled “Can email stop working when you change your website?”, its first paragraph should actually answer that question.

This helps the reader. It also makes the page's essential information easier for a search system to identify.

A useful structure is:

direct answer → explanation → practical example → checklist → sources where needed.

4. Publish information the rest of the web does not simply repeat

If 50 pages say the same general thing, a 51st rewrite adds little.

A business's strength is its first-party information:

  • what its own service includes
  • actual prices and terms
  • its processes
  • real examples of past work
  • guidance based on practical experience
  • its own calculators, checklists or data

When discussing its own service, a business should be the best source for questions about its own details.

5. Keep business information consistent everywhere

If the pricing page, FAQs, articles and service page give different prices or terms, search systems can also receive conflicting information.

Keep these details consistent in particular:

  • business name
  • service name
  • price
  • contract terms
  • contact details
  • service area

When something changes, update older mentions.

6. Cite sources where claims need support

A technical or legal guide is more credible when it links to the original authority or documentation.

For your own service price, link to your own pricing page.

This also helps readers check the information themselves.

7. Track traffic from ChatGPT

OpenAI says it adds the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter to referral links in ChatGPT search results. This lets you identify traffic from ChatGPT in analytics if your site has suitable measurement in place.

Your business can also keep a list of important customer questions and regularly check which sources ChatGPT uses to answer them.

Do you need llms.txt or a separate AI website?

OpenAI does not require an llms.txt file to appear in ChatGPT search results. Publishing one does not guarantee citations either.

Google also says its AI search features do not require new machine-readable AI files or special schema markup.

The priority remains a good public website, crawler access, a clear structure and useful content.

Can you promise a customer visibility in ChatGPT?

Not reliably.

OpenAI does not publish its complete ranking logic and explicitly says that placement is not guaranteed.

A sensible goal is therefore to make the website an eligible, useful source, rather than promise a particular mention.

How does GC approach AI search?

GC's search optimisation includes clear structure, titles, meta descriptions, a sitemap, indexing settings and a mobile-friendly implementation. We aim to make the business's services and contact details understandable to search services too.

Ongoing content work and broader development of AI search visibility are separate services, but technical access and clarity should not be left to chance.
