First, establish whether the page is missing from Google's index altogether or is indexed but ranks poorly for the search you are using. These are different problems and need different fixes.

Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool (URL means Uniform Resource Locator) is the quickest way to check an individual page's indexing status.

Problem 1: Google has not indexed the page

Common reasons include:

  • the page is new and Google has not processed it yet
  • it has a noindex directive
  • Googlebot is blocked
  • no crawlable links lead to the page
  • the page returns an error
  • Google has chosen another URL as the canonical, the preferred version of the same or very similar content
  • the page is very similar to another page

Open Search Console, inspect the URL and read the reported indexing status.

If the URL is technically sound but Google does not know it yet, add it to your sitemap, link to it from elsewhere on your site and request indexing.

Problem 2: The page is on Google, but you cannot find it with your chosen search

This is a ranking problem, not an indexing problem.

For example, a page may be fully indexed, but for “accountant Turku”, Google's systems consider other results a better match for the user's needs.

In that case, check:

Does the page answer the right question?

If a page tries to sell five different services at once without properly answering the searcher's question, Google has less reason to show that particular page.

Do you use your customers' language?

The page should naturally use the words customers use to describe their problem. That does not mean repeating the same keyword dozens of times.

Is the important information available as text?

If essential service details appear only in an image, animation or an interface that is difficult to load, both visitors and search engines have a harder time using them.

Is the content actually useful?

Google recommends helpful, reliable content written for people. A page that merely repeats general statements from other websites gives Google little reason to rank it above them.

Problem 3: You see different results from your customers

Search results can vary by location, language, device, time and, in some circumstances, personalisation.

Searching for your own business on your phone is therefore not a complete measure of its rankings.

Search Console gives a better view of:

  • the queries for which your page receives impressions
  • average position
  • clicks
  • which pages receive visibility

Check these technical points

If a page is not appearing as expected, work through these questions:

  1. Does the URL return a successful HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) response, such as 200 OK?
  2. Does it have noindex?
  3. Can Googlebot crawl it?
  4. Is the canonical correct?
  5. Is the page in the sitemap?
  6. Do normal internal links lead to it?
  7. Can Google see the important text in the rendered page?
  8. Does the page serve a genuinely different purpose from other pages on the site?

What about the title and meta description?

A clear title helps Google and visitors understand the page's subject. A meta description may be used as the search result description if Google considers it suitable for that query.

A meta description cannot fix a page that does not answer the searcher's question.

A useful order of work is:

indexability → the right search intent → good content → a clear search result → ongoing improvements based on data.

How does GC account for this?

GC's website service includes technical search engine optimisation at launch: titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, clear URLs, a sitemap, indexing settings, image alt text and a mobile-friendly implementation.

Technical readiness does not automatically produce high rankings, but the site does not launch with search engine access left for you to resolve.

If your page has just launched, read how long Google indexing takes. If Google does not know the site at all, start with how to get your website on Google.
