Local Google visibility is built through both your business website and Google Business Profile. Google says local results mainly depend on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. A business cannot buy a better local ranking, but it can give Google clear, current information.

Local visibility is especially important for businesses whose customers search for services in a particular area, such as hair salons, restaurants, renovation companies and physiotherapists.

How does Google Maps visibility differ from a normal search result?

Google can show a local business:

  • in Maps
  • in the local business results group
  • in ordinary web search results
  • in some situations, in Google's generative search answers

Google Business Profile gives Google local information about the business. The website provides more detail about services, content, references and getting in touch.

They do not compete with each other. They complement each other.

Google says local visibility depends on three factors

1. Relevance

Relevance describes how well the business information matches the user's search.

Help Google understand the business:

  • choose the correct business category
  • describe services clearly
  • keep contact details current
  • provide the real location or service area where it belongs in the profile
  • use the same accurate service information on the website

2. Distance

Google considers how close the business is to the searcher or the searched location.

SEO tricks cannot get around this.

If a business operates in Turku, building dozens of almost identical city pages just to suggest a nationwide local presence makes little sense.

A city or area page is worth making when the business actually serves that area and the page contains genuine local content.

3. Prominence

Google uses the term popularity. In practice, this concerns how well known and established the business appears to be.

Google mentions factors including:

  • links and mentions elsewhere on the web
  • the number of reviews
  • the quality of reviews
  • ordinary web search visibility

Local SEO therefore involves more than filling out a business profile.

What should you maintain in Google Business Profile?

Check at least that:

  • the business name is correct
  • the profile is verified
  • the address or service area is correct
  • the phone number works
  • the website address is correct
  • opening hours are current
  • the primary category describes the business
  • services are described
  • photos are real and current
  • reviews receive appropriate replies

Google says complete and accurate business information helps businesses appear in relevant local searches.

What should a website include for local search?

A local business website should clearly explain:

  • which service is offered
  • where the business operates
  • how to get in touch
  • which area the service covers
  • what work or customers the business has had, where these can be published

For example:

"Roofing"

is less informative than:

"Roofing in Tampere and neighbouring municipalities"

if the business actually serves that area.

However, you should not repeat the place name in every paragraph.

Does every city need its own page?

No.

A separate city page is justified when it has value of its own.

Good reasons can include:

  • the business has a location in the city
  • it does substantial work in the city
  • services or availability differ by area
  • the business has real local references
  • customers in the area have different questions

A poor reason is:

"Let's just change the city name in the same text."

Google warns against producing low-value content at scale. Local pages should help people, not just increase the number of URLs.

What about AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google's 2026 guidance says Google Business Profile can also help local businesses appear in generative search experiences where local business information is relevant.

The same rule applies here:

keep the business's public information accurate, consistent and useful.

A quick audit for a local business

Ask:

  1. can the business be found by name in Google Maps
  2. is the Business Profile verified
  3. do the website and profile have the same contact details
  4. does the site clearly show what the business does
  5. is the real service area visible
  6. are opening hours current
  7. does the business have real photos
  8. are genuine customer reviews coming in
  9. does the website have locally relevant content
  10. does contacting the business work on a phone

How does GC's website service relate to local visibility?

GC's website service presents the business's services, contact details, page structure and agreed SEO elements clearly on the website.

Google Business Profile is a separate Google service. Its information should remain consistent with the website.

If a business needs new city or service-area pages, they should not be created automatically. First establish that each page answers a real customer need and has useful content of its own.
